We’re thrilled to announce that PERIPrem (Perinatal Excellence to Reduce Injury in Premature Birth) has been shortlisted for the provider collaboration of the year at the HSJ Awards 2021, recognising outstanding contribution to healthcare – in what has been an exceptional and challenging period across the sector.
This follows hot on the heels of the announcement earlier in the summer that PERIPrem is also a finalist in the HSJ Patient Safety Awards 2021 for pilot project of the year.
Designed and delivered in partnership with 12 NHS trusts, both the West of England and South West AHSNs, the South West Neonatal Network, parent partners and clinical experts, PERIPrem is a fantastic example of genuine collaboration and co-creation across organisational and geographical boundaries, bringing people together with a shared ambition to improve outcomes for preterm babies.
Despite the demanding circumstances of the past 18 months, over 1,000 entries were received for this year’s HSJ Awards, with 205 organisations, projects and individuals making it to the final shortlist. The volume and standards of applications has been a true testament to those health and social care staff, who continue to push outstanding work and transformational projects across the sector.
Following the intense and in-depth judging process, PERIPrem was shortlisted ahead of the official awards ceremony to be held on 18 November. Standing out amongst tough competition from hundreds of other exemplary applicants, PERIPrem was selected based on the ambition, visionary spirit and the demonstrable positive impact that the collaborative have had on both patient and staff experiences.
Launched in May 2020, PERIPrem is a perinatal care bundle, which consists of 11 interventions, such as delayed cord clamping, early breast milk and prophylactic hydrocortisone. These interventions can have a significant impact on brain injury and mortality rates amongst babies born prematurely.
PERIPrem is optimising care by bringing all partners involved in the care of the preterm together to redesign systems at regional level. This included designing a quality improvement (QI) data tool, establishing a perinatal clinical collaborative, and putting parent partners at the heart of the project.
Noshin Menzies, Senior Project Manager for the West of England AHSN, said: “Through PERIPrem, we have created what we believe to be the UK’s largest perinatal QI clinical collaborative, and we are all so proud of what we have been able to achieve together, despite the challenges of delivering the project during the height of the Covid 19 pandemic. Reaching the finals of the HSJ Awards is testament to the passion, commitment and drive of individuals and teams across the South West.
“Our collaborative brings together colleagues from all 12 maternity trusts across the South West region, along with teams from the two AHSNs and the Neonatal Network, clinical experts and parent partners, and we continue to drive perinatal improvement using a common language and streamlining processes. In addition to saving the lives of the most vulnerable babies, PERIPrem is improving the chances of disability-free lives and is nurturing high-functioning perinatal teams with QI skills.”
