DigitalHealth.London recently announced the 20 small and medium sized businesses (SMEs) selected for their latest flagship Accelerator programme.
Those selected for the 2020-2021 programme have digital solutions or services that have the highest potential to meet London’s NHS and social care challenges. From patient self-management tools and femtech to digitizing NHS processes, as well as artificial intelligence and cutting-edge machine learning, this group of 20 digital health innovators is set to transform key aspects of health and social care in London and beyond.
Carey McClellan is amongst those selected, with his digital self-management platform getUbetter, which provides true local self-management support for patients with common musculoskeletal injuries and conditions – helping them to trust their recovery and have the confidence to use less healthcare resource.
Carey’s work with the West of England AHSN first began in the very early stages of his innovation journey, when he received support to get early ownership of his content and ideas, his intellectual property.
In 2013, he graduated from the Health Innovation Programme (HIP) – an intensive, fully funded, development course, run by the West of England AHSN in partnership with SETSquared – the global no.1 university business incubator. The programme helps healthcare entrepreneurs to develop business propositions with real potential to transform healthcare, and equip them with the core skills in entrepreneurship to take their propositions forward.
HIP “supported us to improve our ideas and business case and provided insight to improve strategy”, says Carey. “It started a thought process that ultimately lead us to pivot our business model to be more NHS focused and integrated.”
Fast forward to 2020 and, with the continued support of the West of England AHSN, Carey is now working on deployment and scale rather than development. He has a contract with NHS England to deliver integrated, digital self-management primary care and is scaling significantly into new NHS regions.
getUbetter is one of five digital health technology companies outside of London (globally) to be accepted onto DigitalHealth.London’s Accelerator latest cohort. This NHS delivered programme, match-funded by the European Regional Development Fund, has supported some of the most effective digital innovations now being used by the NHS. Many of the digital products and services currently providing vital innovation, support and capacity to the NHS during the response to COVID-19, have come through the Accelerator programme.
