This month the founders of seven companies graduated from our first ever Commercialisation Academy, designed to support health and care innovators whose products and services offer potential for wider adoption and scale.
Run in partnership with Triple Chasm, the eight-week programme has supported each of the companies to develop their strategic commercialisation plans. The programme is based on the Triple Chasm Model®, which provides a holistic data-driven framework built on research into around 3,000 products taken to market.
The innovators were invited to a special event in Chippenham on 6 March, where they had the opportunity to pitch their offers and receive critical feedback from a panel of NHS colleagues from across the West of England.
The seven companies taking part in the Commercialisation Academy were:
- Acumentice(Sigma View) – automated patient pathway management, integrating data from multiple clinical systems to track patients accurately and in real-time.
- Avid– a range of engaging digital care programmes that comprise health coaching, content and data insights to drive proactive action for health risk reduction.
- Cognitant (Healthinote) – a platform connecting people with accessible health resources and self-management tools and facilitating shared decision-making.
- Expert Self Care– creator of information and signposting apps for health and wellbeing service providers.
- Feedback Medical (Bleepa) – a clinical collaboration platform designed to connect multiple NHS systems across care settings.
- RateMyShift– a real-time staff experience app that collects sentiment and feedback to facilitate timely dialogue between individuals and their line managers.
- The Sound Doctor – bite-sized films and structured education courses to help people manage long-term conditions.
The panellists invited to give feedback to the innovators’ product pitches were:
- Chris Trow, Associate Director of Strategy, Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
- Lawrie Kidd, Anaesthetics Consultant, Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
- Owen Thomas, Digital Programme Director, One Care
- Sanjoy Shah, Deputy Chief Medical Officer and Consultant in Intensive Care, North Bristol NHS Trust
- Seb Habibi, Deputy Chief of Transformation and Digital Officer, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board
- Tim Keen, Associate Director of Strategy, North Bristol NHS Trust
- Natasha Swinscoe, Chief Executive, Health Innovation West of England
- Pete Carpenter, Director of Programmes, Health Innovation West of England.
One of the NHS panellists, Lawrie Kidd from Gloucestershire Hospitals is also Clinical Transformation Manager for the HealthTech company DrDoctor.
Lawrie commented: “I felt incredibly lucky to be invited to sit on the panel at the finale of the Commercialisation Academy for HealthTech innovators in the West of England. The participants have developed a real community and sense of camaraderie, which – given what how competitive the healthcare innovation space can be – was wonderful to see.
“Mentored by Triple Chasm, it was abundantly clear how much these founders have gained from their journey, and I very much look forward to monitoring the progress of these companies.”
Alex Leach, Deputy Director of Programmes at Health Innovation West of England said: “We are keen to support impactful products and services to gain traction across the NHS, which can be extremely challenging. We teamed up with Triple Chasm to develop the Commercialisation Academy to support promising innovators to achieve precisely that goal, and we’ve been so impressed by the standard of companies that have graduated from this first course.
“We’re really excited to see how they build on what they’ve learned and how the insights they’ve gained will shape their offer to benefit the health and care systems, as well of course patients and citizens.
Sam Dods, Chief Operating Officer and co-founder, Triple Chasm added:
“Congratulation to all the innovators in the first cohort of the Commercialisation Academy for their inspiring presentations. They’ve all worked incredibly hard since the programme started in early October 2024 to challenge their existing thinking and generate new commercialisation strategies to accelerate adoption of their products and services into the NHS.
“It’s been great teaming up with the Health Innovation West of England team to develop and deliver the Commercialisation Academy. The immediate impact of the programme in terms of change in commercialisation understanding is clear, and we look forward to continuing our work with the team to track progress of the first cohort and refining the programme for future cohorts.”
