getUBetter – an evidence-based digital self-management platform for all common musculoskeletal conditions – which began its early journey on our Health Innovation Programme – has recently been selected by the NHS Innovation Accelerator (NIA) for its award-winning accelerator programme.
Founded by Dr Carey McClellan, the getUBetter app helps to provide digitally enabled MSK care and support self-management across the whole care pathway. Carey is one of ten innovators selected for the NIA programme, which will provide support over the next three years to scale getUBetter up across England’s NHS, for the benefit of patients and staff.
The aim of the NIA is to help create the conditions and cultural change necessary for proven innovations to be adopted faster and more systematically through the NHS, and to deliver examples into practice for demonstrable patient and population benefit.
getUBetter is already used in the NHS occupational health sectors across South London and South West England and is prescribed by clinicians (GP, physiotherapists, occupational health) during patient consultation, when injury recovery is recognised as suitable for self-management.
The app can support the self-management of 80% of new or recurrent MSK injuries and conditions presenting to primary care, providing patients with a better service – via direct and immediate 24/7 support and whole pathway care. It has also been proven to reduce the need for prescriptions, follow up appointments and referrals, therefore helping to reduce inefficiencies and costs to the healthcare system.
The West of England AHSN supported Dr McClellan in the early stages of developing the getUBetter’s app through our Health Innovation Programme, helping him around intellectual property and in developing a business strategy and proposition.
